Preface:
This exhibition, rooted in Eastern philosophy and revolving around"essence beyond imagery"and “infinite universe”, re-explores the expressive power and creative potential of traditional media within a contemporary context. Employing diverse media like ink painting, mineral pigment painting, calligraphy and seal carving, the artists not only inherit classical spirit but also reconstruct cultural vocabulary, initiating a profound dialogue on media, ideology, and zeitgeist.
In Eastern aesthetics,“imagery” (象) transcends mere formal visuality; it serves as a bridge to “essence” (意), the intangible spiritual core. As the I Ching advocates “using imagery to express thought”, the artists navigate between tangible images and intangible essence, embodying art’s evolution from sensibility to rationality. This transformation – from the physical to the metaphysical – reinterprets traditional techniques while expanding contemporary art’s expressivity and philosophical depth.
The exhibition underscores a dynamic equilibrium between form and spirit, echoing the Eastern philosophical tenet of the “Middle Way”: seeking harmony and coexistence between void and solid, complexity and simplicity, stillness and dynamism. The works showcase not only technical innovation but also cultural convergence and renewal – an interplay and a mutual resonance between tradition and modernity across times. Based on this, the event tries to reawaken visitors’ sensitivity to Eastern artistic spirit, inviting them to experience the infinite philosophical realm where imagery and essence intertwine, and to discover the boundless possibilities for cultural transmission in the interaction between traditional and contemporary.
