Exhibition Preface

This exhibition is presented under the theme “Void and Substance” Through two distinctly different media—watercolor and oil painting—the works enter into a visual dialogue between reality and ethereality, the concrete and the imagined. In the world around us, there are scenes that can be seen with the eyes, as well as realms that are felt with the heart. Painting is the place where these two realms are brought together in brushwork and held in color—conveying the artist’s perception of the world.

Watercolor, inspired by water and shaped by color, is especially skilled at expressing “Void” Between gentle washes and soft blurs, the brush feels light and hazy. There is no need to insist on finely drawn contours; instead, the artist captures the atmosphere created by the movement of light, and the fleeting moments of daily life and scenery. In these spaces left blank, meaning quietly gathers. Through the blending of pigments, the artist reveals inner states—turning street views, seaside moments, and the beauty of morning and evening into airy, serene images. Rather than striving for a complete reproduction of reality, watercolor writes feeling with a light, subtle, and tender hand. It preserves the faintness and softness held deep inside—the true spirit of painting “the void” with watercolor.

Oil painting, by contrast, carries “the substance” through its solid texture and layers of accumulated depth. With pigments built up one after another, brushstrokes become weighty and powerful. Architectural surfaces, the gradations of light and shadow, and the true forms of objects are rendered with careful precision. What the eyes behold—along with the tangible immediacy of lived experience—is carefully translated and fixed onto the canvas. With full-bodied color and steady texture, oil painting holds onto the warmth of reality and the contours of everyday life—therefore, oil painting is the art of rendering “the substance.”

Through watercolor’s void presence and oil painting’s real substance, the works mirror and complement one another, merging into a shared language. The illusory is emotion and poetry; the real is scenery and daily life. One light and one heavy, one blurred and one clear—between every stroke of color, a balance is sought.

Life, too, is a constant interplay of the void and the substance. There is the everyday truth of meals and routines, and there are also the poetic horizons we long for within. For the artist, painting is never only a matter of technique or craftsmanship—it is a gentle response to life itself. Amid the noise of passing days, once the brush is taken up, the mind can settle. Moments of reflection and insights from everyday living, along with the beauty of the world, are gathered at the tip of the brush and left within the painting.

Artist Profile

Josephine Ng (吳珊芳) is an artist and designer. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Design Arts and works in art education as the Art Director at an education center. She is also a designer who loves the beauty of simplicity. For her, art is a secret code between herself and the world. Even as a child, when she scribbled with a pen and drew on paper, she unconsciously began writing her own code—one only she would understand. As she grew older, her career initially led her away from art work. Yet during the pandemic, she found a spark that reignited her passion for art, bringing her back to creative practice.

She believes that aesthetic beauty exists in everyday life. She especially enjoys hand-drawing and sketching from life. Using a unique perspective, she records the beauty of Macau—a small city full of character—through travel sketching and plein-air studies. Her works are mainly created with watercolor, quick sketches, oil painting, and ink wash. She often features strong contrasts of light and shadow, along with a distinct viewpoint: cool stone walls set against warm lighting create a striking contrast that leaves a lasting impression. To keep growing, she continues to learn under the guidance of Mr. Lio Man Cheong, a renowned Macau painter. With the inspiration of a great mentor, she remains devoted to honing her craft and further developing her skills.
